Wang Yan

Born in Anshan, Liaoning province of China, in 1956, Wang Yan gained his BFA from the highly respected Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts located in Shenyang, the biggest city of northern China. Like most artists of his generation, Wang Yan had been, since very young, practicing art as a passionate hobby with little or no hope of becoming a professional. These artists of his generation in China felt lucky to be accepted by art institutes in 1977, as the first generation of art students to enroll since the 10 year suspension of all universities during the "Cultural Revolution." Now they became well trained by the art institutes' devoted professors, who were enthusiastic about being able to teach again after such a long period of social turmoil. Together they worked towards the ideals of building a better society and of pursuing high quality art; a lot of serious, dynamic energy was created. Wang Yan was selected to become a faculty member of Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts after graduation, and since then has never put his attentions and efforts far away from social and art issues. During several decades of teaching and creating art, Wang Yan has established his own artistic style, influenced a younger generation of painters, and earned himself numerous prizes and honors in prestigious national exhibitions and collections.
