Artist Statement
China has changed much over the past decades and is still changing vastly and tremendously. You can see it and feel it every day. These changes are fast and widely-spread into the details of people’s lives. I have been as fascinated by these changes as I have been baffled by them. Amongst these changes, those shown and still happening with Chinese women are the most interesting and dazzling to me. From the “internationalized fashion” of metropolitan girls, the ways they dress, talk, walk, go about their daily lives, to the ideas, thoughts, and private feelings of the women close to me, I enjoy observing all them, to notice all kinds of changes in them. I’m always amused by my observations, and keep trying hard to understand the feelings and thoughts of women. I see them being both bold and subtle in pursuing freedom in society, and even more so in private life. I see their sensitive and ever growing curiosities in new ideas and in trying new things. Meanwhile, I am often surprised by their patience of just waiting for the new to come, and their tolerance of the old way, the only way known by our mothers and grandmothers, and with which we were raised.
